Pre-Blogging Book Hunts -- F&F #12

Feature and Follow Friday is hosted by Parajunkee of Parajunkee’s View and Alison of Alison Can Read.

The goal is to increase blog followers and to make new friends. If you want to take part, answer the question posted and add your post to the linky, follow the hosts and the featured blogs, and hop from blog to blog leaving a comment to say hello, and follow to your hearts content. It's the you-follow-me, I-follow-back and vice-versa method.

This Weeks Question:

Before blogging (dark times people!) how would you find out about new books, or did you?

Immediately before blogging, the answer would be Goodreads. Digging further back in time, things get a bit murky. Say, six or seven years ago, I visited the library a lot more than I do now. I’d browse the shelves and randomly choose any book that caught my attention at the time. Once I found an author I liked, then I’d have a look around for other books written by them.

Another way would be the blurb adverts at the end of those books. (Now, I skip right over them!) If I liked the sound of the blurb, I’d see if I could find it at the library. More often than not, they wouldn’t have the books I was looking for. The bookshops nearby weren’t any better - I wanted to support them, but it’s so hard when they don’t stock what I wanted to read, or have a big enough selection within the genres I like. :(

TV had a bigger role than I would like to admit! For example, I probably wouldn’t have read the Sookie Stackhouse books as soon as I did if it wasn’t for True Blood.

I slowly began moving all my searches online. Easons and Amazon had a big influence on any new books I came across. I’d end up doing google searches for those books, and ended up stalking quite a few blogs. Once a friend of mine introduced me to Goodreads, that was the beginning of my never-ending TBR lists!

    1. That's a pretty good thing actually! I have hundreds of books I added before I started blogging and chance are I'll never get around to any of them.

  2. Oh nice! Yeah, it was definitely harder pre-blogging days. I didn't even know about TBR piles/mountains until blogging! I actually found the Sookie (the then Southern Vampire Mystery) books by browsing the shelves! They were among my first "adult" reads along with Kim Harrison's Hollow series and Rachel Caine's Weather Wardens! And now they're all ended! Still need to read Kim's though! :D

    Here's my Follow Friday

    1. LOL! I was the same! Back then, I had maybe two, three books maximum in my house waiting to be read at any one time. Now... we're talking three figures if I include ebooks...

  3. TV and movies definitely influenced me, but I don't think that was a bad thing. As long as I could discover new stories I didn't mind where they came from. Love that you still went to libraries.

Thanks for visiting my FF, following back. Have a great Friday!

    1. Yes, exactly! I loved the Sookie books (until the last few) so it was completely worth it. Thanks Kat, have a great weekend!

  4. Doesnt it suck to "watch" the book first XD I did that with Harry Potter, and so missed out! I havent gotten into The Sookie Stackhouse series yet, because I havent finished True Blood, and I'd rather conclude with the show so I dont get mixed up on the details =)

    1. It does! If I'm honest though, I sort of prefer the True Blood TV series... I think that happens me a lot with book/TV adaptions. If I start with the TV series, I'll prefer the TV series, and if I started with the books, I'll prefer the books!

  5. I started Goodreads the same time as I started my blog. And same as you, I browse online now, more often than walking up and down the bookstores' aisles.

Thank you for following. Following back via GFC.

  6. Hi, I'm a new Bloglovin' follower. I didn't discover Goodreads until a few years ago and I didn't really look online for books before then. I mostly just looked in book stores or borrowed from friends or the mobile library.

  7. Great answer! I especially like how you (reluctantly) admit that TV had an influence on what you chose to read! Sometimes the book is better than the TV show/movie, or so I've heard...

Thanks for stopping by my blog! :)

    1. LOL! For me, I think it depends on which I watch or read first. If I read the books first, they usually win out, and then vice versa if I watch the TV show/movie first!

  8. Oh, yes, browsing books and reading blurbs were dark times, indeed :) Thanks for stopping by earlier, Lori.
    Happy reading.
