Teaser Tuesday: The Falconer by Elizabeth May

Teaser Tuesday Journey Through Fiction

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly meme created and hosted by MizB @ A Daily Rhythm. Anyone can join in: just choose some teaser quotes from your latest read to share. (Just be careful to avoid spoilers - nobody likes spoilers!)

My teaser this week if from a book I finished over the weekend: The Falconer by Elizabeth May. It’s a Historical Fantasy with some Steampunk elements thrown in, and I HIGHLY recommend giving it a go if you haven’t read it already. It’s the first book in a trilogy, and thankfully the second book is due out soon! So, onto the teaser…

“What’s so funny?”

Kiaran straightens. “When you picked up that pistol, I never expected you to shoot me.”

I smile and laugh, too. “Didn’t you always say never to draw a weapon unless I intend to use it?”

“So you do listen to what I say.”

“When it suits me.”

[…]

“That might have amused me this time, but try it again and I’ll break your pistol.”

I match his stare. “Break my pistol and I have about fifteen other weapons that will do the same job.”

His grin is slow, downright seductive. “I knew it since the say I pulled you out of that river.”

“What?”

“That you would always challenge me.”

It was a freedom that she was still working for, because even though she’d tasted it only for a heartbeat, it had been the most exquisite heartbeat she’d ever experienced.

She took a steadying breath and looked him in the eye. It was time.

“The king sent me to kill you.”

My Teaser: Unhinged by A.G. Howard

The flowers close in and push me toward him, rough, leafy hands scraping across my neck and cheeks, cinching my hair at the scalp so I can’t lean away. He smiles, so close that I feel the heat of his breath on my face.

“I won’t let you,” I insist. “I won’t let you into my world.”

“Too little, too late,” he murmurs against my humming skin. “By the time they find your body, I’ll already be there.”

Alyssa Gardner has been down the rabbit hole and faced the bandersnatch. She saved the life of Jeb, the guy she loves, and escaped the machinations of the disturbingly seductive Morpheus and the vindictive Queen Red. Now all she has to do is graduate high school and make it through prom so she can attend the prestigious art school in London she's always dreamed of.

That would be easier without her mother, freshly released from an asylum, acting overly protective and suspicious. And it would be much simpler if the mysterious Morpheus didn’t show up for school one day to tempt her with another dangerous quest in the dark, challenging Wonderland—where she (partly) belongs.

As prom and graduation creep closer, Alyssa juggles Morpheus’s unsettling presence in her real world with trying to tell Jeb the truth about a past he’s forgotten. Glimpses of Wonderland start to bleed through her art and into her world in very disturbing ways, and Morpheus warns that Queen Red won’t be far behind.

If Alyssa stays in the human realm, she could endanger Jeb, her parents, and everyone she loves. But if she steps through the rabbit hole again, she'll face a deadly battle that could cost more than just her head.

I'm loving Unhinged so much! I did mention in my Stacking post on Saturday past that I have a bunch of ARC's to read, and I was afraid I'd give into temptation when this little gem showed up in the post last week. Well, erm... *ahem* ... I gave in. I mean, once I opened the box and I glanced at the book, it screamed "Read me. Read me now!" How could I say no! Books I need to read? What books?! I don't remember any other books...

My Teaser: Crane by Stacey Rourke

“Dark grows near, sense the fear,” a voice, possessing the deep rasp of death, croaked in the sing-song tempo of a nursery rhyme. “Cloak of night, brings Horseman’s plight. His pricy toll, will be a soul. Run and hide, before his ride. Or the dead –" The face of a haggard old woman peeked around the back of the chair, her mouth open in a wide, toothless grin. A shock of white hair framed her ghastly face, falling to gaunt shoulders in wiry wisps. “– Shall claim ye head.”

"No," said Polly dubiously. "The vet told me not to give him one."
"You can't just call him "the puffin". What about Pete?"
"Peter Puffin?" said Polly. "Not sure. Sounds a bit like a newsreader. What about Muffin?"
"MUFFIN?" said Tarnie. "I can't believe you'd inflict that on the poor thing. All the other birds will laugh their heads off at him."
