The Hunger Games set to Music... sort of.

Music Monday is a weekly book meme created by Athena @ Total Book Geek. Everyone can join in, you just have to do the following:

- Choose a book or a scene from a book.
- Choose a song that fits said book or scene.
- Tell us why you paired them together.
- Don't forget to share the title and author.
- Be careful not to include spoilers!

The Hunger Games by Susan Collins is my favourite Young Adult series from any genre, and in the top three of my all-time favourite series. I'm going to split this into three parts, one post for each of the books in the series.

I found it impossible to choose one song to represent the first book, The Hunger Games. There is just so much going on to limit it to a three or four minute song. I might try to put together a playlist at some stage… we’ll see!

Two of the main things that affect the lives of everyone in Panem are The Capitol, and the yearly Reaping. I chose my two songs based on these two aspects.

The first song I chose is Hunger Strike by Temple of the Dog. The Capitol continually oppress and control the population of Panem – they have plenty, while the Districts barely survive. I think the song fits this quite well, and I guess you could also interpret a little nod to Peeta in there too…

Lyrics:

I don't mind stealing bread from the mouths of decadence
But I can't feed on the powerless when my cup's already overfilled
But it's on the table
The fire is cooking and they're farming babies, while the slaves are working
The blood is on the table and their mouths are chocking
But I'm growing hungry
I don't mind stealing bread from the mouths of decadence
But I can't feed on the powerless when my cup's already overfilled
But it's on the table
The fire is cooking and they're farming babies, while the slaves are working
And it's on the table, their mouths are chocking
But I'm growing hungry (Growing hungry)
I'm growing hungry (Growing hungry)
I'm growing hungry (Growing hungry)
I'm growing hungry (Growing hungry)

My second song reminds me mainly of the Reapings, but also the games itself and what each tribute faces. It’s Dissolving Bonds by Katatonia, just look at the lyrics. If you think about it, the reapings really are like a very twisted “Obscure graduation day” – if you make it to eighteen without being chosen, you’ve made it to a life of servitude without being forced to kill, or be killed. With the options available, that really is one of your better odds, I guess?

Lyrics:

And here you are
So much time did you waste from times before
So shut down your sky
Bow down, lights out and die

And now you go
The cold chill cracks, a positive self-detach
Inanimate heart
Hurting razor throat

A destined goodbye
Bells rang out the day of your worst fear
Obscure graduation day
Left you but with memories to bear

Lost in hopelessness
Seclusion cut you just as deep as knives
Dissolving the bonds
Time was set to fade away your lives

You said, you would always give your love
You said, you would always be caring
You said, you would never abandon
You said, you would

Tell me what you think of the songs, and thanks for reading.

  1. I like this idea! I have A LOT of trouble matching songs to books which is kind of funny because I love music so much. Good job! I look forward to hearing your pics next week!

    1. Sometimes certain songs just sort of click, and every time I listen to them they remind me of the book. Hope you liked them and thanks Kristalyn!

  2. So awesome that you chose two songs and both are amazing. I never even heard of these artists, but they work really well together with the ideas you have :)

    1. Thanks Athena! Temple of the Dog is complete throw back to the early 90's just before Soundgarden and Pearl Jam were officially formed (Plus I'm a little obsessed with Chris Cornell, and I'll listen to pretty much all his music!) A really good friend of mine introduced me to Katatonia a couple of years ago, and I've been a big fan since. Thanks so much for stopping by! :)
